Initial reactions in the Arab world to the outcome of the U.S. presidential election focused on several aspects. While some writers discussed which candidate would be better for the Arabs, others compared the democratic process in the U.S. with the situation in the Arab world, where such turnover in government is impossible.

Following are excerpts from some of the reactions:

Al-Qaradhawi: The Democrats Are Like a Snake That "Kill[s] You Slowly Without You Noticing"

In a fatwa published on the eve of the U.S. elections, Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi expressed his preference for Sen. John McCain as president: "Personally, I would prefer for the Republican candidate, [John] McCain, to be elected. This is because I prefer the obvious enemy who does not hypocritically [conceal] his hostility toward you… to the enemy who wears a mask [of friendliness]."

Al-Qaradhawi added: "Whoever thinks that the Democrats are less hostile to [the Arabs] than the Republicans should know that the number of Iraqis killed during the siege [of Iraq] by the Democrat Bill Clinton is twice as high as the number of [Iraqis] killed by the Republican [George] Bush.

"The Democrats kill you slowly without you noticing it – and therein lies the danger. They are like a snake whose touch is not felt until its poison enters your body.

"Therefore, I hope that McCain comes to power, so that the motivation for jihad remains in our hearts, and so that we do not [begin to] rely on the infidels – [which will cause us] to be struck by the fire [of Hell]."(1)

Iranian Daily: "That Black Man" Will Never Change U.S. Policy

In an editorial, the Iranian daily Jomhouri-ye Eslami stated: "The most that that black man can do in the White House is to replace some of the staff and change some ceremonial procedures. He will never manage to change the structure of the American regime, which was established by capitalists, Zionists, and racists."

The paper added that President Obama would not bring change to the world, because both the Democrats and Republicans were party to the U.S.'s oppressive and interest-driven foreign policy. Therefore, it said, any changes that do occur would be tactical rather than strategic.(2)

Syrian Daily: "We Hereby Declare Obama the 44th President [Before It's Official]... Even If It Might Be Considered Irresponsible Journalism"

In its headline, the Syrian daily Al-Watan named Obama president even before the official results were announced. The editorial that accompanied the headline explained: "We wanted to declare Obama president... as a show of solidarity with millions of Americans, Arabs, and colleagues in the world media who [all] yearn for 'change' in U.S. foreign policy. They are all betting on Obama – who has been waving the slogan [of change]… in hope that he will be different not only in the color of his skin, but also in his view regarding Washington's policy towards the world…

"Some claim that if Obama wins he will be no better than Bush, if not worse... They may be right, since it is well known that no American president has ever stood on the side of the Arabs – rather, they have all stood on the side of Israel…

"Yesterday was undoubtedly a long, exhausting, and historic day by any standard. The American people [voted] with a vigor not seen in any [previous] U.S. presidential election, in a bid to make history and change the ugly face of the U.S.

"Out of respect for them and for everyone who voted for change, and out for respect for the souls of the Syrian, Iraqi, and Arab martyrs, we hereby declare Obama the 44th president of the U.S., even if it might be considered irresponsible journalism. We are sure that our readers will forgive us if we turn out to be wrong – [a possibility] for which we do not hope."

Saudi Daily: No Difference Between Obama and McCain

The Saudi daily Al-Watan stated in an editorial: "There is no significant difference between Obama and McCain. They disagree only on the means to achieve America's chief goal, which is to rule for another hundred years."(3)

Al-Hayat Columnist/Al-Arabiya Deputy Director: "The Faces [in the White House] Change in a Way That We Find Impressive"

Daoud Al-Shiryan, columnist for the Saudi daily Al-Hayat and deputy director of Al-Arabiya TV, praised American democracy, comparing it to the nondemocratic processes in the Arab world: "The U.S. elections afford a kind of change that does not occur in the Arab 'democracies'... The faces [in the White House] change in a way that we find impressive.

"Over the next few days, the world will see a new staff [there], while the current names will forever disappear from the [stage of] American politics. The [current] stars of American politics will go home, and the day after they leave the White House, the American public will see them standing in line at the airport, at the supermarket, or at the dentist's office...

"While America watches this turnover of personnel [in the White House]... the Arabs are following [attempts in] Algeria to amend the constitution and remove the restriction on the number of consecutive terms allowed the president – so that 'Abd Al-'Aziz Bouteflika can continue with a third term in office, and perhaps [remain in office] until the end of his life.

"In the past few days in Egypt, the [ruling] NDP party showed its impressive ability to retain the same people over three decades. [Egypt] uses ballots just like the U.S. – but does so the Arab way.

"The situation is similar in the other Arab democratic republics as well..."(4)

No Change other than MORE government is on the Horizon

Ron Paul: No “Change” Is On The Horizon

Ron Paul points out that Obama will not cut spending, government will get bigger and more intrusive, foreign policy will remain the same and unpopular bailouts will continue.

Banner for Liberty

I will take today to grieve the beginning of such a loss that so many Americans think is a HUGE win...only time will tell but as for now you will NOT convince me he is right. He is a terrorist, a socialist and my kids will not be raised to give him any respect he has not earned it!!! I will make it my mission to Campaign for Liberty and help spread Ron Pauls message of lets take America back!!

A sad American got little sleep last night

From a fellow myspacer and friend's blog:
politics and where to place blame

well its been a big night .tonight we as americans elected our first black president. and several texts and conversations i have had with friends and family have made me think about a couple things.so i am writing this to hopefully try to set a couple things strait and i know that not all will agree with me.but you don't have to agree with me that's the great thing about freedom of speech...

i have heard all night that people will be losing there jobs because of the Obama tax plan.and that business's will go out of business and that unemployment will go to a all time high.i respectfully disagree over the last 4 months i have watched friends and family get laid off and fired and get their hours cut all because of the economy my husband and myself included. i have watched business's go out of business as a result.

ALL of this has happened under the Bush administration!!!!!

over the last 8 years unemployment has risen, gas and oil prices have risen...the heath care system is horrible.i have a friend that had to claim bankruptcy because medicaid based her income on the month that she worked instead of the month she spent in the hospital..and don't even get me started on the war in Iraq. I'm not saying that we should not have gone over there just that it could have been handled a hell of a lot better and less messy. and that's all ill say on that.

in fact the only good thing that i can say that Bush did in his 8 years of fucking up the country is to ban partial birth abortion.

so can everyone stop blaming the new president elect for things that are happening now. because 24 hours ago Obama prolly didn't think he would get elected. i think that we should all take a moment and take pride that the American people have made history tonight by electing the 1st black president its something that i honestly never thought would happen in my life time...and I'm only 24..

so now i have said my peace...

My response with a few choice in words of how to word certain things from another great and knowledgeable online friend:

Freedom of Speech? while I still have it I will chime in my thoughts respectively of course.

Just because he was able to bully and use the coalition of Blacks (Racist), Communist, Radical Friends, Muslims, Hate Traditional Values Americans, Liberals and Democratic Congress does not give him a license to "Own America".

BO is nothing more than a paper pusher supported by all of the above; he does not now nor ever have my respect or will ever be considered my president. I only wonder how long before America has Buyers Remorse!! For the first time ever my children will not be told to respect a leader. I didn't like Clinton, but respected him. I have never felt about any one person as I do about BO.

McCain did not speak for me when he "Surrendered" to BO on Tuesday evening. I ONLY voted McCain to give that one more vote against Obama. My values are very much that of Ron Paul.

The Booosss he received from his audience were well earned and deserved. Congrads to McCain on his loss. I realize he did it out of "respect" to BO, but HE doesn't deserve respect he has NOT earned it with me and if you look at the map a good portion of what is currently the UNITED STATES is NOT for BO. I will say it again and again until people listen there will be another war only this time on our own grounds against each other. Historical Amnesia has brought this all on.

though Radicals using BO to steal the power base of our Country, I am not angry ... I am one VERY hurt citizen that Americans of any color or shade would stoop so low as they did on Tuesday November Fourth 2008. I am happy my father and grandfather are not alive today to see what has happened to all their years fighting in wars to keep America free for those FREE today Americans to sign over their lives to a Socialist.

As an FYI Bush no isn't perfect or great, he was doing fine until 1.5 years ago when America started chiming they wanted change. so they started voting in dems THAT is when the economy started tanking as it has. Obamas tax plans are going to further RUIN this great nation. I have a good twenty friends from very well paying jobs out of a job as of yesterday. they were warned should Obama be elected that by the new year many more would be out of jobs because they won't be able to pay the taxes that obama has proposed and seeing that he has quiet the dem backing he will be able to pull off his wish list in bringing down America. He wants to do away with our flag, change our national anthem and so much more. Yeah we are getting change alright hope everyone that voted for this yeah there is no respectful term for him but congratulations for destroying America and ruining my dreams of being a business owner. At this point I can only hope for a miracle before he is inaugurated and really does damage.

Dennis Miller from Jay Leno

" Dennis Miller was on Jay Leno, and he was really funny.

He was asked by Jay who he favors, and he said, 'I'm voting for McCain.
People need to understand that all of Hollywood is not for Obama.

Anyone who served their country in a rat hole as a prisoner for 5 years
deserves my vote. (Huge applause) Hey, he gave us 5 years, I'm willing
to give him 4 back."

I don't like the fact that Obama has played his color card all by
himself. He said, 'People might not vote for me because my name sounds
funny.'
McCain and his people have never gone there. Obama playing that card
turns me off.

I'm not worried about the color of his skin I'm worried about the
thickness. Quite frankly, he gets a little too winey. (Huge applause)

And his wife; She is a bad night. If she were barking in my ear while
I was driving, I'd take a sharp left and go off the cliff.

Barack missed the boat when he didn't pick Hillary, and I'm no Hillary
fan. But quite frankly, she earned to be picked, and I believe the
American women can relate to her. She has been cheated on more often
than a blind woman playing scrabble with a bunch of gypsies.

Sarah Pallin isn't perfect, but I don't want her to be perfect. We've
had smart people as vice presidents before. Nixonwas smart, and he
turned out to be a nightmare. Gore was smart, but I never got him. I
want someone normal as VP who is like me.

People say McCain will die 1 day after being elected. Hey, everyone
knows Barack smokes, and look at what the actuarial tables say about a
47 year old smoker. He dies, we get Biden, and he's as old as McCain. He
dies, and we get Nancy Pelosi, and then I'm leaving the galaxy." (a side note from me...I am with Dennis on this one I will leave the galaxy as well!!!)

BO says he will Bankrupt Coal industries

Pass it on they vote on Tomorrow. Please if you are undecided before you mark your vote tomorrow seriously consider all aspects!!

Here is the transcript of Obama's statement about bankrupting the coal industry (emphasis mine):

Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It's just that it will bankrupt them.
